ROG Phone 6 Pro Review & Unboxing - The Ultimate Gaming Smartphone

What’s up, guys? Saf here on MobileErbazaar, and this is the most powerful gaming smartphone in the world. This is, of course, the ROG Phone 6 Pro. Now, there is also an ROG Phone 6, which is very similar. I don’t have it with me, but I can tell you about the differences, and we no longer have an ultimate edition. The pro really takes the place of the ultimate.

Let’s go ahead, get it unboxed and see what it has to offer. So, as always, we have a very unique looking ROG box, which slides open like this. And inside, we’re straight away presented with the device, as well as that, there’s a pack with a SIM card tool and a case that’s included out of the box. We then have a braided USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable, as well as a 65 watt fast charger, which can get the ROG Phone 6 Pro from zero to 100 percent in around 42 minutes, which is around 10 minutes faster compared to last year.

Basic Of ROG Phone 6 Pro

Let’s go ahead and get the device out of it’s plastic. And here it is, the ROG Phone 6 Pro. We’ve got it in this stormy white color, which is frosted at the back. The ROG Phone 6 is available in a white, as well as a glossy black, but you’ll notice right away that this white color is quite similar to what we had on the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate last year. And if we do bring in the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, you’ll see that things are quite similar, but the design has been changed a little bit, and we do have a larger camera module. The positioning of the ROG vision secondary display, the back has also been changed. And this is now a PM older display, which will give you lots more colors. The ROG Phone 6 regular edition does have an RGB display, but it’s not going to be as good as the 6 Pro. The ROG vision secondary display now has 60 plus new animations, and you can of course customize this too. But the biggest change that we’ve got on the build and design of the ROG Phone 6 series is something that you can’t actually see. And that is the fact that this is now the world’s first gaming smartphone with an IPX4 for splash resistance rating. Now, although you’re not going to be able to submerge this fully into water like some other flagship devices that have an IP68 rating. If you do get some splashes of water on it, or if you’re using it out in the rain, then that should be absolutely fine.

Don’t worry. We’ve got Gorilla Glass three here at the back, but we do have Gorilla Glass Victus at the front. Now, this is a 6.78 inch full HD Plus Samsung display. And it now has a refresh rate of up to 165 hertz. That’s up from around 144 hertz that we had last year. We also have a 720 hertz touch sampling rate bringing down the latency on the ROG Phone 6 Pro to just 23 milliseconds, which is the lowest latency on any smartphone right now. That is super responsive. Just to give you some context, the S22 ultra, for example, has around 35 milliseconds of latency. So, although that’s really low, this is even lower. Now, you can change the refresh rate down to 60 hertz. You can’t go all the way down to around one hertz like we can do on some of the devices, but this is still really good. And we do have a peak brightness of up to 1200 nits, which is pretty bright.

ROG fashion & Sound

Now, in usual ROG fashion, we don’t have a punch out or a notch or anything like that. We do have top and bottom bezels. These are pretty small, and I’m pretty sure you’re not going to have any issues with these, especially if you’re somebody who appreciates good audio. And that’s because we do have symmetrical front firing stereo speakers. These are five magnet, 12 by 16 millimeter speakers, and also have the game effects audio system, as well as the Qualcomm aptX Lossless audio and aptX Adaptive technology. Now, in my experience, these are some of the best and loudest speakers that you’re going to get on any gaming smartphone out there.

But if you are somebody who prefers plugging in, then you do have a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, of course, here at the bottom, as well as a USB Type-C port. On the right hand side, you have the power button, as well as the volume buttons and the air triggers. So, these are two built in ultrasonic buttons with nine different gestures. So, you can do things like obviously press them, but you can also slide. And there’s also gyroscope aiming with motion control and 10 different gestures. We have nothing at the top, apart from a mic. And on the left hand side, we have the SIM cart tray, as well as a site mounted USB Type-C port. Now, I absolutely love this. I believe ROG were the first to have a side mounted USB Type-C port.

Review of AeroActive Cooler 6

And of course, the reasoning for that is if you do want to charge the device while you’re playing, then you can just plug it in. And then, the cable’s not going to come in your way. However, it also has an additional benefit. You can attach some accessories on to here on the side. And of course, the main accessory is the new AeroActive Cooler 6. Now, this is sold separately, although, you’ll still be able to get it with the ROG Phone 6 Pro with certain pre-orders. I’ll try to leave some links down in the description below, but let’s go ahead and check out the AeroActive Cooler 6. So, you’ll see that we’ve got a new design, and it is larger, and it attaches on pretty easily. You can just press this button here, slide it in, and then snap it into place. All right, the RGB lighting in the back looks really, really slick. I can already hear the fans. Now, having the AeroActive Cooler here at the back means that you can reduce the temperature by up to 25 degrees Celsius. You also have a bunch of customizations for the AeroActive Cooler. So, you’ve got different cooling modes, as well as lots of different customizations for the lighting. We’ve also got four physical buttons here on the AeroActive Cooler. So, in addition to your air triggers and all the different commands that can have on there, you can customize these physical buttons, which feel really good. Now, one of the reasons why the AeroActive Cooler 6 is positioned in this central way as it is is because of the internal design of the ROG Phone 6 Pro. The SOC, the system on a chip, is actually in the middle with the battery split into two above and beneath. And this centered SOC design allows for higher thermal efficiency.

Let’s talk about the SOC. This is powered by the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip sets. And I believe this is the first device in the world that is going to be shipping with this chip set, as 10 percent faster CPU and GPU performance compared to the already fast 8 Gen 1. And it has 30 percent higher efficiency. So, in terms of specs, it is right up there. You do have up to 18 gigabytes of RAM with 512 gigabytes of storage. In addition to that, you do have a 30 percent larger vapor chamber, as well as an 85 percent larger graphite sheet. ROG have also used boron nitride, which is a special thermal compound. The first time I ever heard of it. And this allows heat to transfer in all directions more efficiently. Now, the main reasoning behind this is, of course, for sustained performance over a long period of time, especially if you’ve got the AeroActive Cooler 6.

Let’s talk a little bit about the software because this is packed full of features. You do have Android 12 out of the box with ROG’s skin, but you do get things like X Mode Plus with performance boost, which is going to give you the highest clock speeds, as well as the highest refresh rate, a revamped Armory Create with graphic boost. There’s a revamped game genie with advanced in-game supportive controls, as well as an edge tool for multitasking anytime with picture-in-picture mode.

Let’s now talk about the cameras. So, we do have a triple rear facing camera set up. The primary camera is 50 megapixels. It is the Sony IMX766 sensor, which is 40 percent larger pixels compared to last year, as well as a 13 megapixel ultra wide camera and a five megapixel macro camera, which remain generally unchanged. Now, obviously, you’re not going to be buying this specifically for the cameras, but the cameras are pretty decent on here. Of course, they’re not going to be as good as certain other flagships which have a focus on cameras, but it’s nice to have some good cameras on this gaming device.

Now, for the battery, as mentioned, we do have the battery split across two. So, it is two 3,000 milliamp power cells, which totals 6,000 milliamps. That’s a very, very large capacity. And with the bundle 65 watt charger, you’ll be able to get zero to 100 percent in around 42 minutes. The last ROG devices had zero to 100 percent in around 51 minutes. So, we do have an improvement of around nine to 10 minutes. The ROG Phone 6 Pro also supports bypass charging. So, you can have power going directly into the device to have an uninterrupted gaming session.

Pricing & Conclusion

And finally, let’s talk about pricing. So, I’ve only been given European pricing at this point in time. The ROG Phone 6 regular edition is going to be starting at around 999 euros. This will be for the base 12 gigabyte of RAM version with 256 gigabytes of storage. But if you do want the ROG Phone 6 Pro, then this is going to start around 1,299 euros, and this is just going to come in one version, 18 gigabytes of RAM with 512 gigabytes of storage. Now, that is a high price and quite a bit higher compared to lots of other gaming centric smartphones, which now do start at much lower prices. But if you are after a gaming smartphone that is built for gamers from the ground up and ticks off pretty much all of the boxes, and I think this may just be the gaming smartphone of the year so far. That’s what I think anyway. What do you guys think? Do drop me a comment below. Let me know your thoughts. I hope you enjoyed this artile and found it useful.
